Thrilling Day at Bushman Plains
The Gods Must be Crazy
Wow game viewing is the norm at Bushman Plains but some events even leave us jaw dropped. Each day before our guides go to work they ask our Ancestors to be with us in the bush, keep us safe and direct us to great wildlife. It seems the Ancestors are very pleased to have us back on our Heritage lands because they are sharing so much with us. Yesterday afternoons drive brought us a massive herd of buffalo, two sub-adult leopards, pack of 12 wild dogs hunting, herds of sable and zebra, coalition of four male lions, and an aardwolf near the camp.
Morning comes and we pick right up where we left off. We tracked and located the four male lions, and then the leopard show began. First a leopard sniffed our tyre, marked it and then passed right under the vehicle! Next we came across a big male baboon, displaying the longest canines in the animal kingdom, followed by an explosive bark. Above in the tree was a leopard with a young baboon kill. The barks continued as the baboon goes up the tree to attack the leopard. In defense the leopard backs up the attacker with a hot slap across the face, but now the troop is massing below. The leopard has to make a split-second decision and drops the kill, springs down the tree, baboons in hot-pursuit as the leopard narrowly escapes into an aardvark burrow. The dominant male baboon then guards and mourns the carcass. Action packed morning.
